Structure of the Draco Dwarf Spheroidal Galaxy

چکیده
This article studies the structure of the Draco dwarf spheroidal galaxy with an emphasis on the question of whether the spatial distribution of its stars has been affected by the tidal interaction with the Milky Way, using Rand V-band CCD photometry for eleven fields. The article reports coordinates for the center, a position angle of the major axis, and the ellipticity. It also reports the results of searches for asymmetries in the structure of Draco. These results, and searches for a “break” in the radial profile and for the presence of principal sequences of Draco in a color-magnitude diagram for regions more than 50 arcmin from the center, yield no evidence that tidal forces from the Milky Way have affected the structure of Draco. Lyrae Stars and Anomalous Cepheids in the Draco Dwarf Spheroidal Galaxy
We present new results on RR Lyrae stars and anomalous Cepheids in the Draco dwarf spheroidal galaxy. We have increased the number of double-mode RR Lyrae stars and found three new anomalous Cepheids. With period-magnitude and period-amplitude diagrams, we discuss the Oosterhoff classification of Draco. Contradictory results were found in that Draco appears to contain both Oosterhoff I and II t...
متن کاملConstraining Global Properties of the Draco Dwarf Spheroidal Galaxy
By fitting a flexible stellar anisotropy model to the observed surface brightness and line-of-sight velocity dispersion profiles of Draco we derive a sequence of cosmologically plausible two-component (stars + dark matter) models for this galaxy. The models are consistent with all the available observations and can have either cuspy Navarro-Frenk-White or flat-cored dark matter density profiles...
متن کاملFirst Clear Signature of an Extended Dark Matter Halo in the Draco Dwarf Spheroidal
We present the first clear evidence for an extended dark matter halo in the Draco dwarf spheroidal galaxy based on a sample of new radial velocities for 159 giant stars out to large projected radii. Using a two parameter family of halo models spanning a range of density profiles and velocity anisotropies, we are able to rule out (at about the 2.5σ confidence level) haloes in which mass follows ...
متن کاملThe Chemical Evolution of the Draco Dwarf Spheroidal Galaxy
We present an abundance analysis based on high resolution spectra of 8 stars selected to span the full range in metallicity in the Draco dwarf spheroidal galaxy. We find [Fe/H] for the sample stars ranges from −1.5 to −3.0 dex. Combining our sample with previously published work for a total of 14 luminous Draco giants, we show that the abundance ratios [Na/Fe], [Mg/Fe] and [Si/Fe] for the Draco...
متن کاملA photometrically and kinematically distinct core in the Sextans dwarf spheroidal galaxy
We present the line of sight radial velocity dispersion profile of the Sextans dwarf spheroidal galaxy (dSph), based on a sample of 88 stars extending to about 1 (∼ 1.5kpc). Like the Draco and Ursa Minor dSphs, Sextans shows some evidence of a fall-off in the velocity dispersion at large projected radii, with significance p = 0.96. Surprisingly, the dispersion at the very centre of Sextans is c...
